The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
