Prime Television Selections: Seven Essential Films This Week

Top Selection

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's bold commentary addresses the oppressive nature of female beauty and the dreaded aspects of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers a masterful performance playing Elisabeth, a mature actress reduced to starring in an aerobics show on television. Forced aside by her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a mysterious and gruesome process titled "The Substance". This creates a new version of herself portrayed by Margaret Qualley, resulting in a steadily more vampiric relationship between the two. October 17th, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit mystery stars the talented actress in the role of Laura, a skilled journalist who takes some time off from reporting on international wars to join a luxury cruise accompanied by a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her partner, plus additional filthy rich individuals. However when an unknown lady falls into the sea overnight and everyone insists she wasn't real, her journalistic curiosity take over. Available now, Netflix

Presence Film

The acclaimed director pushes his directorial skills with this nifty ghostly tale captured wholly from the perspective of a ghost. After a clan including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their recent residence, the lens – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. Chloe seems sensing the poltergeist, and it looks like guarding her. But why? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame via this meta comedy caper. He plays a narcissistic celebrity named Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to visit a birthday party in Mallorca for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by government spies to spy on the suspected cartel boss, his unconventional method is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective even without a sequel. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has made the youth anxious. After Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a dungeon, he fears the worst. However, the old telephone on the wall continues to ring, with ghostly voices providing assistance, and the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, 10.50pm, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for Mammon in this director's brilliantly over-the-top biopic of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who declares early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye set about capitalizing on the people's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, bad makeup and bad faith, however Jessica Chastain achieves to show the character in a likable light. Next Tuesday, early morning, the Film4 channel

This Espionage Thriller

The current week's second offering from Steven Soderbergh delivers a intelligence thriller as precise like the turtlenecks sported by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He is tasked to discover a double agent among the team from five suspects – among them is his own wife. Each performer are experts of understated style, leading to a delightful mental battle of truth or lie takes place. The supporting cast take part the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, various showings, the Sky channel
