The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
